Section Three - Protected Vegetable Crops

ree

Meet Sam, Section 3 lead at Kehelland Trust....

There is never a dull moment in this section.

More is more here where the focus is on tomatoes, courgettes, peppers, chillies, early runner beans, winter salad, oriental leaf  & squash. With over 400 tomato plants there is a lot of crop maintenance needed - that's a lot of side shooting and winding onto strings. Trainees in this section get stuck in to loads of different tasks from seed sowing, to pricking out, planting out, weeding, harvesting and feeding crops.

Once the tomato crop is settling in August this section moves on to the mammoth task of pressing our apple crop. In a good year we press around 1800 bottles or pouches of juice and the team are fully involved in this process; sorting, washing, crushing & pressing. They still find time for a bit of giant veg production and working on the  the team's 'allotment' where they bring on a few other seasonal veg such as parsnips, carrots & leeks.  Watch this space as they collaborate with Section 2 in 2026 for our new Pick Your Own area.
